(Wenham MA) Roger Williams (1-3-1) came away with a 2-2 tie against Gordon (2-1-1) in men’s soccer on Saturday afternoon at Gordon.

The Scots and the Hawks are about as familiar with each other as two teams can get having met seven times in the last 3+ years.  How do you do that?  In each of the last three years they have been matched up in the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament.

Two overtimes were played in declining daylight and RW nearly won the thing in the first OT.  Tyler Kuchenbecker was so sure that he had done just that that he had stripped off his shirt after putting in a rebound.  That celebrating was short lived, however, as the apparent game-winner was tallied on an off-sides and the goal was disallowed.

The Hawks kept tight coverage on the CCC’s best player (senior Caleb Cole) all game long as freshman Garrett Bolton was his full-time shadow.

Plenty of contact and plenty of fouls.  Twenty-six for RW while GC was whistled seventeen times.  Trying to sort out the hits from the dives put every call up for discussion.  Referee Adam Kilpatrick kept the red card in his pocket, however.

I was immediately surprised when I saw this year’s Gordon schedule.  They play eleven games at home and just five on the road.  How is that managed?

RW scored on a direct kick and a corner kick.  I don’t know where the Gordon wall was on Sean Janson’s direct kick.  Chris Chieffo’s corner kick perfectly set up a leaping Charlie Mader for a goal-producing header.

Caleb Cole was stepped on in the penalty area by Garrett Bolton and cashed the PK with a low shot near the left post.  Tyler Modzeleski took a pass from Danny Nkhalamba from the middle and fired a grounder past RW goalie Edmund Geschickter.

Gordon won the CCC championship last season and have back the defensive POY (Ben Gradert) and the offensive POY (Caleb Cole).  All-League selections Josh Spoonhour, Collin Surface, Josh Cochran, and Tyler Modzeleski are also on hand for the 2017 season.  Not surprisingly, the Scots were selected to finish first by the CCC coaches in their pre-season poll.  However, as Roger Williams showed (they were picked for 6th) there are plenty of good teams in the conference and wins will be hard to come by.
