(Wenham) I got to my 4th Gordon Hall of Honor event (in five years) held for the first time on campus. The entire proceedings took place in the science building.
The first inductee presented was Norma “Beetle” Bailey by her college roommate Janet Frost Olson. I recall Beetle as a shortstop on the Gordon softball team.
Neither woman had a whole lot to say, especially Beetle. She said thanks and was finished in less than thirty seconds! The quickness of it caused AD Jon Tymann to deadpan the memorable line of the night, “Well, she told me she was a woman of few words.”
The second inductee was goalie Bobby Brooks. He now lives in nearby Manchester-by-the-Sea. Former soccer teammate Tim Askew flew in from long distance to be the presenter. Bobby told of how his Gordon teammates and coach had positively impacted his life.
The final inductee was Barrington basketball player Jim Sziksai. Jim started out explaining that he was going to use the word “blessed” a lot ……………… and he did, quick to praise God for the help he’d gotten along the way.
Jack Augustine was Jim’s presenter. The big news, regarding the legendary Barrington coach, was that he’ll be honored next year when the 2012 event is held in January.
