(Newburyport) Sometimes stats are misleading but not in the case of Crown College. This team has struggled for some time and continued in that direction in a 74-44 loss to Gordon at home (St.Bonifacius MN) on Monday night.
The winless (0-9) Storm fielded a team of eight players. They lacked height (tallest player 6-5) and experience (six freshmen). If you’re a Gordon follower, you know that the Scots have size and an inside game. You also know that despite being nearly entirely underclassmen the Scots are experienced. Point? Gordon’s strengths were The Storm’s weaknesses, which are surely the ingredients for a long evening for somebody.
The Scots capitalized on their advantages and ran off 15 straight points during one 6+ minute segment in the first half, changing a 4-3 deficit into an18-4 lead. Gordon started the second half with more of the same as they put together a 19-2 run over nine minutes to send a 37-22 advantage to 56-24.
No question this was a nice, easy win for Gordon (8-2) after the tough loss (69-62) two days prior against Northwestern.
It wasn’t surprising that The Storm had trouble defending Aaron Trigg on the outside and Ben Gaskill on the inside. Aaron hit four 3’s on his way to a game-leading 24 points while Ben had a career-high 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Ben also added three blocks.
Junior Ben Drake had his best game as a Scot. He logged 22 minutes in this one after playing just one minute in the previous nine games. He contributed seven points.
This Saturday (3PM at Wentworth) Gordon shifts into Commonwealth Coast Conference play. In reality, the previous ten games were arranged to get the team ready for CCC action. The records of teams in the CCC are very misleading at this point because you can’t get a true gauge on the competition faced. However, the league looks balanced which means that your Scots have as good a chance as anyone to bring home the CCC title.
I waited until after 10:30 last night looking for a score/something from the Crown game. I wonder when the result was called in to D3Hoops.
I am looking forward to attending, weather permitting, the remaining games on the schedule. I will also have my camera handy so try to look your best!
